Super Tuscan

Updated: Jan 3, 2021

Considering the complexity of the history and background of the wine in the Tuscany, I would like to write as short and simple as possible. We generally associate Tuscan wine with Chianti, this assumption is correct, but the "Super Tuscan" isn't part of the Chianti game.

As many of you are aware, Italians take their wine laws very seriously, the goal for every winery is to achieve both denominations "DOCG" and "DOC", the rules are hard to break, but the legend of the "Super Tuscan" starts with the innovation of "Sassicaia", owned by the Antinori family, at that time, the oenologist Giacomo Tachis decided to re-create the 3 grape mix once Baron Bettino Ricasoli formulated (Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Malvasia bianca, which later the last grape was omitted from the mix, because the Chianti had to be full bodied and Malvasia bianca is a white grape that does not contribute to the body of the wine.) Giacomo integrated grapes from Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Subsequently the triumph of Sassicaia, the family created Tignanello (please check my video on Instagram, date 5 April 2019), another formula with Sangiovese and Bordeaux blend. As a result, Tignanello wasn't allowed to earn the DOC classification. Despite the declassification, Tignanello is one of the most prestigious wine in the market of Tuscany today. Albiera Antinori, the winemaker explains the history of Tignanello in an interview with James Suckling on Master Class.

I attended my Master Class of the Chianti, Chianti Classico World and they are absolutely fantastic, but I must admit that "le gonnare" from Fabio Motta very much impressed me.

Mainly black fruits on the nose, with beautiful tertiary flavours in the palate, super balanced, indeed a Super Tuscan.

Thank you for selecting the best of the best for the Master Classes @ The Good Wine shop Chiswick.
