The Good Wine Shop

Gerd Bernhart’s vineyards are located ⅔ on Alsatian soil; this is due to historical events, such as border changes within the limits of France and Germany during the 19th. Century event. This Chardonnay is classified as VDP. Gutsweine, organic and made out of 100% Chardonnay. Weingut Bernhart specializes in Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Gerd practices organic viticulture and truly believes that the soil is an asset for good quality wines. The winery has been a member of the VDP since 2004. The terroir determines the growth of the varieties. On a calcaire soil, Pinot Blanc, Gris and Noir. On a sandy soil he grows Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Accolade: Vinum, Eichelmann, falstaff 2021 - 3 starts for Sonnenberg KT PN 2017.

Good to know:

19th. Century event: Franco-Prussian.

His ancestors purchased land in Wissembourg, today France in 1900, at that time, this territory belonged to Germany, where French Third Republic had to yield to the German administration during the Franco-Prussia War. Half a century later, this territory was then returned to France. Due to these events, the wineries around this area can comply with German wine laws, therefore his wines can be labeled as “Pfalz”. Viticulture started in 1971 after many decades of livestock and agriculture.

*VDP - Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, a German association of wine producers for higher quality Prädikatswine. (Higher than Deutscher Qualitätswein). Entry level VDP.

*Weingut - Wine estate.

*Pfalz or Rheinpfalz used in Germany, it is the most fertile and sunniest wine region and it is known as the Palatinate, named after former Counts Palatine of the Holy Roman Empire, smaller than Rheinhessen (see previous post), but has more wine producers.

Photo 1 taken by my husband, he thought the angel belongs to the bottle, the angel is from my very good friend and neighbour, when we lived in Germany. I thought the photo is beautiful.
